Tactical buyer role

Strategic sourcing

Many times you see the description Strategic Buyer where tasks consist of sourcing and contracting, something Learn How to Source organize in in the role Tactical buyer. Due to the sprawling descriptions of Strategic buyer, that role has been avoided. Strategic buyer, in job advertisements, is more an indication that the potential new colleague should be experienced rather than a description of a role. Learn How to Source chooses to divide Strategic sourcing into the roles Purchasing Management and Tactical buyer.

The role of Tactical Buyer and the relationship with Operational procurement is described by Arjan van Weele in the book Purchasing and Supply Chain Management.

Examples of tasks that are part of the Tactical Buyer role are market analysis, sourcing, handling of supplier quotations, negotiation and contracting of deliveries that the organization needs. This is done by running and participating in cross-functional category / procurement teams and improvement initiatives. Supplier Management supports a differentiated commitment with suppliers and defines the most appropriate relationship. By optimizing supplier management, suppliers' contributions are also optimized.

The role also includes coordination of product life-cycle, project management in supplier development projects, processes Know your supplier (collection of information about suppliers and thereby reduce the risks that naturally arise in the supply chain), Supplier Audit (when and why it is appropriate to implement a Supplier) Audit) and possibly a product qualification process.
